In Pursuit of Worship

Lately I have been trying to write a few songs and in doing so have discovered a few principles.

1) Keep it simple. No one wants to sing  a wordy song in church. Identify the simple truths and keep them simple.

2) (This really should be #1) Identify your audience. There is a big difference between a congregational worship song and a song written for an album.

3) Write from either your heart or scripture; God speaks through both.

4) In coming up with worship sets, choose a meaningful passage of scripture. Break the scripture into 3-4 parts and assign a song to each break. This is an easy way to create a set, even if you don’t read the scripture. The message of the songs will do the work for you if done right.

That’s it for now, I’m still learning a lot though…
